China's X86 server market has experienced negative growth for the first time in 10 years

IDC's Tracking Report on China's X86 Server Market in the First Quarter of 2019 shows that the shipment volume of China's X86 server market in the first quarter of 2019 was 662504, down 0.7% year on year; The market size was 3.590 billion US dollars (about 24.09 billion yuan), up 13.5% year on year.


In the first quarter of 2018, China's X86 server market shipped 666938 units, with a market size of 3.158 billion US dollars (about 19.895 billion yuan).

In the first quarter of 2019, the X86 server market in China was cold, and the shipment volume showed a negative growth for the first time since 2010. However, due to the continuous rise of the average price, the sales volume still reached a double-digit growth.


On the one hand, the reason for the negative growth of shipments is that the first quarter itself is the off-season of procurement; On the other hand, the large-scale expansion of Internet customer business last year brought about high demand, but from the fourth quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2019, the demand of Internet has significantly contracted and delayed compared with the first half of last year.


Although the price of accessories has declined, at the same time, the configuration of Internet customers and customers in traditional industries has continued to improve, and the number and capacity of hard disks and memory continue to increase.


The average price of X86 servers keeps growing to a record high. Especially, the average price in telecom, finance, education and other industries is significantly higher than the average price in the X86 server market.


In the first quarter of 2019, according to the market share of the manufacturers, the top three manufacturers by volume are Inspur, Dell Eason and Huawei; According to the sales volume, the top three manufacturers are Inspur, Huawei and Xinhua.

The global X86 server market size slowed down in the first quarter of 2019 after six consecutive quarters of higher than double-digit growth. The growth rate of shipment decreased by 5.3% year on year, and the growth rate of sales increased by 6.0% year on year.


In 2018, China's X86 server market shipped 3304300 units, up 26.1% year on year; The market size was 17.189 billion US dollars (about 115.195 billion yuan), up 54.9% year on year. IDC predicts that the shipment of X86 servers in China will exceed 5.25 million by 2023, and the overall market CAGR will be 9.7% in the next five years.


Throughout 2018, The main factors driving market growth are In the Internet, telecommunications, finance and service industries, the growth rate of shipments exceeded 20%, among which the growth of large Internet and operators was particularly strong;


  • In terms of products, Internet users mainly choose rack and multi node servers. Traditional industries tend to use rack servers more often. Large telecommunications and governments have begun to deploy multi node servers, which has continued to expand the market share of rack and multi node servers and shrunk the market share of blade and tower servers;

  • From the perspective of manufacturers, Inspur, Huawei and Dell Eason are among the top three in the market in terms of shipments and sales. ODM manufacturers continue to expand their market share in China;

  • From the perspective of market trends, the market for AI servers, edge computing servers and other niche servers for specific workloads is booming. Major manufacturers are accelerating their deployment in this field and launching new products. These niche markets will still be the hot spots of the market in 2019.
